The Last Duel premiered on September 10th at the Venice Film Festival. So far, reviews have been largely positive, with many critics praising Scott’s direction and Comer’s performance. IndieWire’s Ben Croll said, “The Last Duel is proving to be an all-too-rare thing on the current Hollywood battlefield: an intelligent and genuinely daring, big-budget hand-to-hand combat that is primarily the product of a recognizable artistic collaboration.”

The Last Duel was written by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Nicole Holofcener. This is the first time Damon and Affleck have worked together since Good Will Hunting. The three authors acted alongside Ridley Scott, Kevin J. Walsh and Jennifer Fox as producers of the film. In a press conference at the Venice Film Festival, the authors spoke about the importance and relevance of film for the Me Too movement.

“It’s about this amazing woman from history who spoke out against a man who attacked her, so of course that seemed relevant [to MeToo]”Said Affleck. “Europe and the countries colonized by Europe did not regard women as human beings for many centuries. We felt that this is a story that can generate catharsis and empathy and we hope that we will look at ourselves in a different way to wonder if our personal perspective is not taking into account another person’s reality – their story, Acculturation, training. “

Damon talked about the difficulties this trio had in writing the film and how they tried to make it different from other male-centered stories: “In the male-centered stories, women appear when men need them for something; otherwise they are ignored. They are property, they are not human beings, “said Damon.” Back then, men were very good at cataloging everything they did, but women’s history was completely invisible – so we all had to make up a lot. “

Holofcener added that she was tricked into adding a feminine perspective to the film, which she believed was necessary for a film like The Last Duel. This information comes from The Guardian. “[Affleck and Damon] “You needed a real woman to write Marguerite’s character,” said Holofcener. “You were wise not to try, although I’m sure you would have done a great job.” The Last Duel debuts in theaters on October 15, and will open for 45 days before it hits VOD.
